The design for the Annex to the Casa Rui Barbosa Foundation presented itself to our team as a double-faceted challenge – the preservation of the precious bibliographic archives of the foundation and the comprehension that this competition was one of the rare historical moments where architecture can carry out its social responsibility.
It seemed essential to us to produce a project that is both architecturally beautiful and functionally simple, as well as with high technical proficiency and reasonable execution cost.
In order to achieve the best possible environmental conditions for the preservation of the archives, the building was conceived in a rational manner – two independent blocks interconnected by a technical core. Block 1 was assigned to hold the daily activities for the public and administration. Block 2, stationed away from the main flow of people, houses the archives.
