The design for the Annex to the Casa Rui Barbosa Foundation presented a dual challenge to our team: preserving the foundation’s valuable bibliographic archives and recognizing that this competition represented a rare historical opportunity for architecture to fulfill its social responsibility.
It seemed essential to us to produce a project that is both architecturally beautiful and functionally simple, as well as with high technical proficiency and reasonable execution cost.
In order to achieve the best possible environmental conditions for the preservation of the archives, the building was conceived in a rational manner – two independent blocks interconnected by a technical core. Block 1 was assigned to hold the daily activities for the public and administration. Block 2, stationed away from the main flow of people, houses the archives.
